The “Wine Routes” label was created by European Funds in two phases during 2004-2006 and 2007-2013. Through the project seven routes were created that consist of wineries, restaurants/ taverns and many other places of interest (i.e. churches, museums etc) and visitors can create their own itinerary according to their interests. The routes were created based on their geographic location and the indigenous grape varieties of each region 1) Laona – Akamas, 2) Vouni Panagias-Ampelitis, 3) Diarizos Valley, 4) Krasochoria Lemesou (Wine Villages of Lemesos), 5) Commandaria, 6) Pitsilia, 7) Mountainous Larnaka – Lefkosia. These 7 “Wine Routes” were created in order to acknowledge and promote the value and quality of Cyprus wine and the island’s long wine-making tradition to both Cypriots and foreigners alike.
